Gulls are a family generally thought to include some 55 types, and are found all over the world, with the most types living around the temperate, cooler climates of both hemispheres. Gulls mostly live near coastlines, although some, such as the Laughing Gull, breed inland, especially around stationary water. Only very few, such as the Kittiwake, spend most of the year at sea. Some - such as the Silver Gull - even follow human activity, and especially in winter, seek out rubbish dumps inland and around large rivers.
